Quran & Hadith on Zakat

Divine commandments and prophetic teachings about Zakat

Quran 2:110

"And establish prayer and give Zakat. Whatever good you put forward for yourselves, you will find it with Allah."

Quran 9:103

خُذْ مِنْ أَمْوَالِهِمْ صَدَقَةً تُطَهِّرُهُمْ وَتُزَكِّيهِم بِهَا

"Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them to increase."

Quran 2:277

"Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds and establish prayer and give Zakat will have their reward with their Lord."

Sahih Bukhari

Ibn Abbas (RA) reported: The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) sent Mu'adh to Yemen and said, "Invite them to testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that I am Allah's Messenger. If they obey you, teach them that Allah has enjoined five prayers in every day and night. If they obey you, teach them that Allah has enjoined Zakat on their wealth, to be taken from the rich and given to the poor."

Sahih Muslim

Ibn Umar (RA) reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Islam is built upon five pillars: testifying that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing prayer, giving Zakat, pilgrimage to the House, and fasting in Ramadan."

Sunan Abu Dawud

Ali ibn Abu Talib (RA) reported: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "I have exempted you from giving Zakat on horses and slaves. Give Zakat on silver: one-fortieth (2.5%) of your wealth."

Why Zakat is Important

Understanding the significance of this third pillar of Islam

Purification of Wealth

Zakat purifies your wealth and increases it in blessings. Allah says: "Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them to increase." (Quran 9:103)

Helping the Needy

Zakat creates a safety net for the poor and needy in society. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Zakat is taken from the rich and given to the poor." (Bukhari)

Social Justice

Zakat ensures wealth circulation and prevents hoarding. "So that it (wealth) does not concentrate among the rich among you." (Quran 59:7)

Obedience to Allah

Paying Zakat is a direct command from Allah, fulfilling one of the five pillars of Islam and demonstrating complete submission to His will.

Protection from Calamities

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Protect your wealth by giving Zakat, cure your sick by giving charity, and face calamities with supplication." (Tabarani)

Growth of Wealth

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Charity does not decrease wealth." (Muslim) - Zakat brings blessings and growth to your remaining wealth.

Understanding Nisab

The minimum threshold for Zakat obligation

Gold Nisab

87.48 grams of gold

Based on the hadith: "For silver, the Nisab is five ounces (200 dirhams)." Scholars analogously set gold Nisab at 20 mithqal (87.48g)

Silver Nisab

612.36 grams of silver

Based on the authentic hadith: "There is no Zakat on less than five awsuq (camel-loads), and no Zakat on less than five ounces of silver." (Bukhari)

Zakat Rate

2.5% (1/40 of wealth)

Based on the hadith: "On silver, one-fortieth (2.5%) is due." (Abu Dawud) This rate applies to all Zakatable wealth.

Hijri Year

One lunar year (354 days)

Wealth must be held for one complete lunar year before Zakat is due, as per the hadith: "No Zakat on wealth until a year passes over it." (Abu Dawud)

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Zakat answered with Islamic guidance

Do I pay Zakat on gold jewelry I wear?

There is a difference of opinion among scholars. The Hanafi and Hanbali schools require Zakat on all gold and silver, including jewelry. The Shafi'i and Maliki schools exempt jewelry meant for personal use. To be safe, many scholars recommend paying Zakat on jewelry that exceeds the normal amount of adornment. The Prophet (ﷺ) said about a woman with gold bangles: "Do you pay Zakat on these?" She said no. He said: "Would it please you that Allah replaces them with bangles of fire?" (Abu Dawud)

When is Zakat due?

Zakat becomes due when two conditions are met: (1) Your wealth reaches the Nisab threshold, and (2) One lunar (Hijri) year has passed while maintaining that wealth. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "No Zakat on wealth until a year passes over it." (Abu Dawud) You can calculate your Zakat on the same date each year according to the Islamic calendar.

Can I pay Zakat to my relatives?

You can pay Zakat to your relatives who are among the eight eligible categories, EXCEPT those you are obligated to support (spouse, children, parents). In fact, giving Zakat to needy relatives brings double reward: charity and maintaining family ties. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Charity given to a poor person is one charity, but to a relative it is two: charity and maintaining family ties." (Tirmidhi)

What about Zakat on cryptocurrency and NFTs?

Contemporary scholars generally agree that cryptocurrency and NFTs are subject to Zakat if they are held as trade assets (intended for investment/sale). They should be valued at their current market price on the day Zakat is due, and 2.5% Zakat should be paid if the total value plus other assets reaches Nisab. The general principle applies: "On silver (currency), one-fortieth (2.5%) is due." (Abu Dawud)

Can I pay Zakat in installments?

It is permissible to pay Zakat in advance or distribute it over time, as long as the full amount is paid by the due date. Many Muslims prefer to pay during Ramadan for increased blessings. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Whoever gives Zakat on his wealth, its evil is removed from him." (Ibn Majah) The key is to ensure the full obligation is fulfilled.

What if I miss paying Zakat for previous years?

If you failed to pay Zakat in previous years while being eligible, you must repent to Allah and calculate the missed Zakat for each year based on your wealth at that time. Pay it as soon as possible. The Prophet (ﷺ) warned: "Every owner of treasure who does not pay Zakat, his treasure will be heated in the fire of Hell and made into plates with which his sides and forehead will be branded." (Muslim) Seek forgiveness and fulfill your obligation.
